Best Time to Visit Southeast Asia: A Month-by-Month Guide
“When's the best time to visit Southeast Asia?” doesn't have one answer. Thailand and Vietnam don't share weather. Cambodia's dry season is Manila's wet. Here's the month-by-month version that travel agents won't tell you because they want you to fly any time.
Quick rule
November to February is the safest answer for the whole region. Cool, dry, low humidity, no typhoons. Flights are 30-40% pricier. If you can't go then, this guide tells you where to redirect.
January
Best for: Thailand (Bangkok 22-30°C, Chiang Mai cool nights), Vietnam (north + south both dry), Cambodia (perfect Angkor weather), Philippines (peak dry season).
Worst for: Nothing major. Chinese New Year crowds late January / early February — book ahead.
February
Best for: Same as January. Add Laos to the list — Luang Prabang is at its prettiest. Thai islands (Koh Samui, Phuket) are perfect.
Worst for: Northern Thailand burning season starts late Feb in some years (air quality drops).
March
Best for: Vietnam (still dry, less peak crowds), Philippines (still dry, beaches at peak).
Worst for: Northern Thailand and Laos (burning season — Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang air quality can hit hazardous levels mid-March to mid-April). Cambodia is starting to get hot.
April
Best for: Songkran water festival (April 13-15) is the experience of the year if you like chaos. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and most Thai cities turn into 3-day water fights.
Worst for: Heat. Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Vientiane all hit 38-40°C. Avoid sightseeing midday. Northern burning season peaks early April.
May
Best for: Last clear days before rainy season. Cheaper flights. Vietnam beaches (Da Nang, Nha Trang) are at peak.
Worst for: Hot everywhere. Philippines just starting typhoon season.
June
Best for: Bali (dry season), Java, Indonesian islands. Vietnam mountains (Sapa) at their greenest.
Worst for: Thailand wet season starts mid-June. Cambodia rains. Philippines typhoons.
July
Best for: Bali, Lombok, Java (peak dry). Northern Vietnam mountains. Off-season prices for SE Asia mainland (cheaper hotels and flights).
Worst for: Thailand and Vietnam mainland have heavy rains. Philippines typhoon risk peaks.
August
Best for: Indonesia, low-season SE Asia mainland (much cheaper, fewer tourists, food still great). Hoi An lantern festival (full moon).
Worst for: Heaviest rains in Cambodia, Laos. Philippines typhoons.
September
Best for: Hoi An (lantern town), Hanoi (autumn arrives, beautiful weather window), Vientiane (rains drop, lush landscapes).
Worst for: Thai islands (some operators close), Cambodia floods, Philippines peak typhoon.
October
Best for: Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay) — best month of the year. Thai islands reopening. Cambodia flooding peak passes.
Worst for: Philippines (still typhoon season).
November
Best for: Almost everything. Thailand, Vietnam (north + south), Cambodia, Laos all in dry-season honeymoon. Best Angkor month. Loy Krathong festival in Thailand.
Worst for: Philippines (typhoons easing but still present early Nov).
December
Best for: Almost everywhere except Vietnam's far north (chilly). Christmas / New Year crowds drive up prices and bookings.
Worst for: Hanoi cold (10-15°C nights), Christmas markups everywhere.
My recommendation
If your dates are flexible: late October to early February is the sweet spot for the entire mainland (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos). For Philippines and Indonesia, February to May is better.
If you have to travel in rainy season (June-October), don't write it off — flights are 40% cheaper, hotels are 30% cheaper, the rain often comes as 1-2 hour afternoon downpours rather than all-day grey, and the landscapes are dramatically green. Just pack a poncho and avoid Philippines if there's a typhoon warning.
